Making a Difference in McKinney
The McKinney Community Development Corporation funds a variety of projects in areas including:
Public Parks and Open Space Improvements; Public Recreational, Sports and Community Facilities; Entertainment, Tourist and Convention Facilities; Economic Development and Job Creation; and Affordable Housing
- PARKS, RECREATION AND OPEN SPACESThe McKinney Community Development Corporation supports enhancement of the natural beauty of McKinney by funding many of the city's parks and recreation projects. MCDC has funded the acquisition and development of land for community parks and helped fund important additions including: Old Settler's Aquatic Facility, the soccer complexes at Al Ruschhaupt Park and Craig Ranch, as well as the ballfields at Gabe Nesbitt Community Park.
- CHESTNUT SQUARE HISTORIC VILLAGEResidents and visitors flock to Chestnut Square to experience life in McKinney as it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. With funding support from the McKinney Community Development Corporation, several historic homes, Dixie's general store, a schoolroom and a chapel have been lovingly preserved for generations to come.
- MCKINNEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTERThe Historic Collin County Courthouse, originally built in 1875 and drastically remodeled in 1927, was vacated in 1979 upon completion of the new Collin County Courthouse. The Historic Courthouse is now the centerpiece of the Downtown McKinney Commercial Historic District and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Plans for rehabilitation of the historic facility began with a series of community forums to secure citizen input and evaluate the building's potential use and programming. In October 2003, work started to re-craft the courthouse as a cultural center, funded with an initial investment of $6,500,000 from the McKinney Community Development Corporation.
The MPAC has distinguished McKinney as a regional leader in supporting the arts and cultivating a unique cultural community along with generating economic development.
- HABITAT FOR HUMANITYMCDC works to improve McKinney for all residents. Over the years we have supported Habitat for Humanity efforts in McKinney in a variety of ways. Grants have been awarded for the purchase of land to build homes and the creation of the Youth United home that was built entirely by participants under the age of 25. In 2011 MCDC provided funding to aid the expansion of Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. ReStore's Re-Sale and Recycling program not only generates funds for affordable housing, but also has kept more than one million pounds of discarded construction materials and home furnishings out of our local landfill.
- OLD FASHIONED ICE CREAM FESTIVAL FEATURING THE KILLIS MELTON ICE CREAM CRANK-OFFMCDC helps fund Chestnut Square's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival featuring the Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off competition. This delightfully delicious event showcases talented and creative community members of North Texas. Pre-registered "crankers" arrive with their ingredients in tow to create memorable flavors for sampling. The event is open to the public – both the cranking and the judging. There's also plenty of homemade ice cream for sale and fun events for the kids.
In addition to community projects, MCDC sponsors community events and promotional activities year round that encourage tourism and business development. These have included: Bike the Bricks, Chestnut Square’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival featuring the Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off, Rotary Parade of Lights, Dickens of a Christmas, McKinney Farmer’s Market and many others.
